The first floor
One room, opened on both sides
The whole upper floor is a single open-plan space over the river — a sweeping breakfast bar, a dining table that seats ten, and lounge seating turned towards the water. Bi-fold doors open on both sides, so the terrace and the outdoor kitchen become part of the room.
The kitchen is properly equipped and entirely electric: double oven, induction hob, dishwasher, wine cooler, coffee machine. Beyond the far doors, a charcoal Egg grill set into granite work surfaces, which more than one guest has singled out by name.

The ground floor
Four bedrooms, four en-suites, no negotiation
All four bedrooms are on the ground floor and every one has its own bathroom. Three open through patio doors onto the Mediterranean courtyard. Bedrooms three and four can be made up as twins instead — worth asking when you book.
There is a shower room down here too, and a boot room with its own outside door for decanting wet sailing kit before it reaches the carpet.

Outside
Down the spiral stair, into the water
The hot tub is private, set into the landscaped patio, and comfortable for four or five. A spiral staircase runs from the terrace straight down to it, which sounds like a detail until you are using it in a robe at eleven at night.
Around it: olive trees in terracotta, a fully fenced garden, sun loungers, and an outdoor dining area that holds the evening light.

We booked a weekend for a group of friends going sailing. The location is fantastic just 5 mins walk into Hamble with various pubs, shops and cafes. The 4 beds and 4 en-suite baths are set up really well for large groups sharing ensuring lots of privacy. The roof top views down to the Marina and the river are calming and serene with the light bouncing off the water in the early mornings. We loved our weekend and thought this was one of the best houses we have rented anywhere.
What an amazing house, beautifully furnished and appointed right down to the soft towels and well provisioned kitchen. The upper living area space is fantastic with a lovely view of the Marina and River beyond, with good entertaining spaces, even the Egg BBQ is special.
The Skippers Retreat was a beautiful home with stunning harbour views — the photos really don’t do it justice. The location is fantastic, situated in a lovely part of Hamble and within easy walking distance of the village, waterfront, and excellent local restaurants. It was the perfect base for a short break away, combining peaceful surroundings with easy access to everything the area has to offer.

A working sailing village, five minutes down the hill
Hamble-le-Rice has been putting boats on the water for centuries and still does. Port Hamble Marina sits below the house; the Square is about five minutes on foot, with pubs, shops and cafés. The ferry crosses to Warsash, and the Solent is twenty minutes down the river.
Southampton is a twenty-minute drive, the New Forest about the same, and south-west London an hour and twenty. Paddleboarding, river-bank walks, and enough sailing to fill a fortnight.
